Masterworks Chorus was founded to bring choral masterpieces to those who might not otherwise hear these works in a live performance. In addition, the chorus gives its participants a chance to be a part of this country’s great choral tradition.
The Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches was organized in August 1979 by Dr. Jack W. Jones and several interested members of the community, most notably Dr. Karen Borchers. It was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in February 1980. The first rehearsal was held on Tuesday, October 9, 1979 at The Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach. The first concert featured Bach’s CHRISTMAS ORATORIO which was presented with live orchestra on November 27, 1979 at Bethesda-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church in Palm Beach. There were seventy members of the chorus at that time. On December 16, 1979, the Chorus presented a mini-concert of Christmas music for the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum’s annual tree-lighting ceremony in Palm Beach. On December 19, 1979 the Chorus sponsored the Second Annual MESSIAH Sing-Along at the First United Methodist Church in West Palm Beach. (The first MESSIAH Sing-Along was organized by Dr. Jack W. Jones and several members of the community prior to the establishment of the Chorus and was held in December 1978 at the First Baptist Church in West Palm Beach.) To complete its first season, the Chorus presented THE CREATION by Joseph Haydn on April 9, 1980 at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church in Boca Raton and repeated the program on April 11 at the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach. From these humble beginnings, the Chorus has grown and flourished in Palm Beach County and beyond. The Chorus has made four European tours and appeared in performances with Palm Beach Opera, Ballet Florida, Boston Esplenade Orchestra and at New York’s famous Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. The Chorus’ diverse repertoire includes Bach’s ST. JOHN PASSION, Rutter’s GLORIA, Honegger’s KING DAVID, Vivaldi’s GLORIA, Orff’s CARMINA BURANA, and Beethoven’s MASS IN C MAJOR.
